Knowledge Through Conversation

Meaningful Conversations

Our system utilizes a user self regulation system that we hope will ensure that all conversations on Ratiocinari.com stay true to our mission to bring philosopical dialouge back to the centre of the learning process. We are determined to create a space where individuals can feel safe sharing their own thoughts while receiving helpful criticism and/or support from a community of like minded individuals. Through the use of a feedback system we will do our best to ensure that every visit to Ratiocinari.com leaves the user feeling intellectually stimulated.

How the User Feedback System Helps

Every post made on Ratiocinari.com is expected to be making some sort of philosophical claim or argument so natrually all responses should be either critical examinations against the proposed argument or supportive responses intended to strengthen the original post. While we will not enforce a minimum word limit for a response or post we will be implementing a system of user feedback beyond simply choosing to respond in support of or against an argument. Users will be encouraged to flag any post they feel is non-philosophical, and should something receive enough flags we will review the material to determine if it meets our sites explanation of a philisophical post.

Given, this sounds an awful lot like censorship; however, the intention (for those who find intention important) is only to ensure the community does not miss out on 'the good stuff' because they are being bombarded with popculture or pictures of food. Simply disagreeing with an individuals argument does not warrant a flag, and we will work to ensure the community understands these differences. An open beta session prior to launch will allow us to expierement with this feature, and we propose community members will find it helps ensure the material they encounter while visiting Ratiocinari.com is not going to be a waste of their time.

Debates and Dialouge

As previously stated the purpose of this site is to learn from one another through philosophical debate and dialouge. We wholeheartedly insist that the best learning happens when you are presented with views which confilict with your own; therefore civil debate is to be encouraged, and we have created a system that we hope fill foster an atmosphere of friendly intellectual sparring.

When you read an argument posted by a fellow user you will be presented with three options for responses: dissenting, concurring, or witholding. Each response or original post can be in the form of text, a video, or a combination of the two. We also will not be nesting responses - although we will have a tagging system so individuals will be able to directly respond to other participants in a particiular discussion directly. The reason for this is simply to keep a discussion on topic with the original poster. If a discussion provokes another thought we then highly encourage you to make an original post covering that subtopic, and tag your friends or even your intellectual adversaries. We hope that this system will create a community with an atmosphere many have been searching for online, but until now have been unable to find.

Unabashed Philosophy

After searching the web we here at Ratiocinari.com were unimpressed by the current options for individuals seeking philosophical dialogue. Oftentimes philosophical sites are either too academic or too elementary. Ratiocinari.com aims to change that paradigm by creating an atmosphere where everyone can feel like they can make a valid contribution to a conversation regardless of their level of philosophical training and background. Here we believe nobody should be shunned from participating in a conversation simply because the have not read Kants' "Critique of Pure Reason," but we also acknowledege that a strong foundation in the disipline is required for an individual to make any true progress towards eudiaemonia.

Ratiocinari.com is a site where individual lovers of wisdom - and yes we mean you! - can come together and discuss whatever happens to be on their mind without all the distractions of other social networking sites. We hope to build a community of philosophers where the free exchange of ideas can help springboard all kinds of intellectual progress, innovation, and just plain fun. Too often internet conversations devolve into nothing more than 'flame wars' between individuals, or clique-groups; but here we insist conversation remains civil, polite, and helpful. That way all individuals involved can learn and grow intellectually without being made to feel inadequate. Always remember that Greeces wisest man Socrates - so called by the Oracle of Delphi - was never shy to admit he knew nothing.

However, with philosophical debate comes disagreement, and we truly believe that through disagreement comes truth; therefore, while conversations will be moderated censorship will only be enforced if there is a clear violation of our terms of use. So long as a disagrement does not become a honeypot for ad hominem debauchery we encourage individuals to continue their pursuit of knowledge through the disagreement in hopes of reaching some sense of true knowledge.

If you have been searching for a place to hang your philosophers cap then we hope you will consider joining our mailing list to stay up to date with our progress. We will keep you up to date often with our newest completed features, and the mailing list is the easiest way to be considered for our eventual open beta test sessions. We hope you are as excited about the possibilities a site devoted purely to the pursuit of knowledge through dialogue can bring to the world as we are here at Ratiocinari.com!
